Pinal County Teachers Examine Math Standards Through Financial Literacy Connections

Several teachers and instructional coaches from districts in Pinal County, recently attended “Making Math Real for Students Through Personal Finance Connections” facilitated by Robin Palmer, Director, Entrepreneurship and Financial Math for the Arizona Council on Economic Education. Students often lack understanding of financial concepts that will impact their lives. The goal of “Money Minutes” is to help students understand personal finance concepts through their grade level standards. “Money Minutes” are free, ready to use questions that are aligned directly to the Arizona Math Standards. Students are able to see real-life connections to the math they are learning because the concepts are presented in the form of a financial decision.

During the session, Robin facilitated discussions on how teachers might implement “Money Minutes” while allowing participants to explore the materials. Each “Money Minute” includes a word problem, possible solution, extension activity, vocabulary and more. The materials are organized so that teachers can efficiently navigate the resource and implement into the classroom.
