Economics and the Civil Rights Movement: Exploring Choices and Trade-Offs

FREE

February 19, 2025
4:00 PM
Grade Level: 7-12

In this dynamic one-hour workshop, educators will explore how fundamental economic principles shaped the decisions and trade-offs during the Civil Rights Movement.

Participants will engage in interactive activities and discussions that connect economic concepts such as opportunity cost, incentives, and resource allocation to pivotal moments in the movement. By analyzing historical case studies, such as the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and landmark Supreme Court decisions like Brown v. Board of Education, teachers will uncover how economic strategies were instrumental in driving social change.

Attendees will leave with ready-to-use lesson plans and tools to help students critically examine the intersection of economics and history, empowering them to apply economic reasoning to both past and present societal issues.

This workshop provides fresh perspectives for teaching interdisciplinary lessons, bringing history and economics to life in the classroom.

All attendees will receive:

  • Ready-to-use, standards-aligned lesson plans that connect economic principles to key events in the Civil Rights Movement.
  • 1 hour of professional development credit
