The Arizona Council on Economic Education (ACEE) proudly welcomes Matt Pierson, Associated Director of the Nebraska Council on Economic Education, as he presents Beyond the Bet: The Economics of Gambling.

Presented by Matt Pierson, Associate Director, Nebraska Council on Economic Education
Gambling is an increasing threat to our youth. Research indicates the average age of first exposure for a problem gambler is just 10 years old. With the rapid growth of online gaming, sports betting apps, and targeted digital marketing, students are engaging with gambling long before they understand the financial and behavioral risks.
This nationally award-winning, three-lesson curriculum equips teachers with classroom-ready, standards-aligned tools to address the issue through an economic thinking framework. Students learn to:
• Recognize warning signs of problem gambling
• Assess personal risk factors
• Analyze incentives driving the sports betting industry
• Apply concepts such as probability, opportunity cost, and behavioral bias
Join us to empower students with critical decision-making skills and proactively address an issue shaping the financial futures of young people nationwide.
All attendees will receive:
- Classroom-ready lesson plans aligned with state and national economics standards.
- Real-world case scenarios that prompt students to evaluate trade-offs, incentives, and social impact through multiple lenses.
- Participants will receive ready-to-use lesson plans, student handouts, engaging activities, and implementation guidance 1 hour of professional development credit
