Grade Level: 7-12

The Federal Reserve is facing an existential crisis. Pressure from politicians, mixed economic data, and a slow-to-evolve toolkit are creating challenges for the next decade of monetary policy. However, to understand what lies ahead, it’s essential for students and educators to first understand how the institution operates. Conducting monetary policy isn’t just about theory and models. It’s a delicate balance between the abstract and the applied and is dictated by both the views of the officials on the Fed’s rate-setting committee and the structure of the institution. Grasping how policymakers weigh the two parts of the dual mandate in periods of economic volatility and role of Congress and why independence is essential for a healthy economy will be key for understanding the future of the U.S. economy.
